Market Commentary

Week in Review

U.S. retail sales rose just 0.1% in April 2025, slowing sharply from March’s 1.7% gain. The boost from pre-tariff vehicle purchases faded, and core retail sales fell 0.2%. Economic uncertainty and stock market volatility led households to cut discretionary spending, despite strong wage growth and a resilient labor market.

Travel Tips

Sign up for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

a useful tool for the frequent flyer

Global Entry (which includes TSA PreCheck) is an incredibly useful tool for the frequent flyer, because it allows you to use the designated kiosks to clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection in minutes after a trip abroad.

The process is even faster when using the Global Entry mobile app, which allows travelers to bypass the kiosks and instead verify their arrival in the U.S. via the app.

Available in over 75 Airports

Global Entry via the kiosk or the app is currently in operation in more than 75 airports. The application fee for Global Entry is $120, and once approved, your membership is valid for five years.

Expedited Security Line

With TSA PreCheck, you’ll get access to an expedited security line and reduced security measures. You can leave on your shoes, belt and light jacket, and your laptop and 3-1-1 liquids can stay in your bag. TSA PreCheck is available at more than 200 airports, with 90-plus participating airlines.

Enrollment Pricing

There are three enrollment partners for TSA PreCheck — Idemia, Clear and Telos — and the enrollment cost depends on how you apply. For first-time enrollees, a five-year TSA PreCheck membership costs $76.75 via Idemia$77.95 via Clear or $85 via Telos. Online renewals for another five years of TSA PreCheck membership cost $58.75 via Idemia, $68.95 via Clear or $70 via Telos. In-person renewals cost $66.75 via Idemia, $70 via Telos or $77.95 via Clear.

Potential Reimbursement

If you don’t have Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, check your wallet and look at your credit cards. Many cards will reimburse the application fees for PreCheck and/or Global Entry up to $120 once every four or five years. Some that cover program enrollment fees are The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the United℠ Explorer Card.

Something Personal

Our Family Trip to the Bahamas

My family recently explored a few newly discovered, secluded islands that truly embodied paradise. We visited Exuma and Long Island, both part of the Bahamas. Each island featured beaches where we encountered minimal crowds. The waters were exceptionally clear, and although dining options were limited, the available seafood, barbecue, and desserts were exceptional.
Despite the pothole-ridden roads, these islands were not designed for significant tourist traffic, which added to their charm. We took boats to sand bars that emerged in the ocean at low tide, engaged in fishing activities, and prepared our catches for dinner. Our encounters included dolphins, stingrays, large starfish, sea turtles, sharks, wild pigs, and even conch, which we subsequently cooked and consumed.

Snorkeling was an activity we enjoyed at various locations, including Dean’s Blue Hole, the second deepest oceanic sinkhole globally, featuring a sudden drop-off of 650 feet just a few feet from shore. This site hosts World Free-Diving Competitions and is one of the most remarkable underwater locations I have witnessed.

Each day, we explored multiple beaches on both islands. Each beach possessed its distinctive character and offered idyllic settings. Although we contended with no-see-ums (tiny sand flies) known for their incessant bites, we managed them effectively using specific sprays and by avoiding outdoor activity during dawn or dusk in lush areas. One of our children recorded upwards of 60 bites, illustrating the challenges we face for enjoying these secluded island experiences we have come to love so much.

We loaded up our cooler, beach chairs, and children’s sand toys, we spent our days relishing the beach environment. The journey back home was adventurous, as we transitioned from these remote islands to utilizing boats and planes to return to Boise. Unfortunately, our luggage was left behind in the Bahamas, and we had to rely on the contents of our backpacks for two days until our bags arrived in Boise four days later. Watching our two teenage daughters act as though the world had ended was quite the spectacle. Rest assured, our bags all arrived in Boise four days later, and our adventure was complete.
