Something Personal

Nicky and Marty’s 20th Wedding Anniversary Trip

For our 20-year wedding anniversary, Nicky and I spent 17 days traveling across Japan on what became one of the most memorable trips we have ever taken.

We started in northern Japan in Aomori and then continued even farther north into Hakodate, experiencing a side of Japan that many travelers never see. Aomori was famous for its Fuji apples, and some of the best desserts of the entire trip came from there — especially the incredible fresh apple pies and pastries in Hirosaki near the castle park and cherry blossoms. Hakodate gave us our first real taste of Hokkaido, with seafood markets, mountain views, and historic districts overlooking the harbor.

From there we boarded several of Japan’s famous Shinkansen bullet trains, including multiple rides in the luxurious Gran Class cars, which felt more like a private airline lounge than a train. The precision, speed, comfort, and service of Japan’s rail system were remarkable. After traveling south by rail, we rented a vehicle and drove through the Japanese Alps, which turned into one of the most scenic portions of the trip. Snow-covered mountains, winding rivers, alpine valleys, and small traditional villages made the drive feel almost unreal at times.

Kamikochi was one of the biggest highlights of the trip. We spent time hiking through stunning mountain scenery surrounded by crystal-clear rivers, suspension bridges, and towering snow-covered peaks. During our hikes we saw the famous Japanese snow monkeys in the wild, something neither of us expected to experience so closely. We also completed the historic hike between Magome and Tsumago in the Kiso Valley, walking the preserved Edo-period trail through forests, waterfalls, mountain paths, and centuries-old villages that felt frozen in time. Between the hikes, scenic drives, and quiet mountain towns, this portion of Japan ended up being one of the most peaceful and beautiful experiences we have ever had.

The food throughout the trip was exceptional. We had what was easily the best sushi we have ever eaten along with unforgettable wagyu steak and teppanyaki dinners in Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Tokyo. Japan’s attention to detail around food and hospitality was evident everywhere, from high-end dining experiences to small ramen shops, seafood markets, bakeries, and local cafés. Even quick stops became memorable meals. The combination of regional specialties, fresh seafood, Japanese beef, and unique local desserts made the culinary side of the trip just as memorable as the sightseeing.

We also experienced the historic and cultural side of Japan in places like Kyoto, Koyasan, Miyajima, Hiroshima, Hakone, Nikko, and Tokyo. Staying overnight in a Buddhist temple in Koyasan and participating in morning prayer ceremonies was incredibly unique, while Miyajima Island gave us another unforgettable hike climbing Mount Misen for panoramic views over the Inland Sea. In Hakone, we rode the famous ropeway cable car directly over volcanic vents and sulfur fields while viewing Mount Fuji rising above the clouds in the distance — one of the iconic views of Japan.

The final days in Tokyo brought a completely different energy. We explored massive city districts, historic temples, beautiful gardens, and some of the busiest intersections in the world. One of the absolute highlights of the entire trip was attending a live grand sumo tournament in Tokyo. Seeing professional sumo in person was far more intense, athletic, and ceremonial than television could ever capture. The atmosphere inside the arena was electric, with generations of fans watching every match with incredible respect and excitement. Watching the size, speed, and power of the wrestlers up close while experiencing one of Japan’s oldest traditions firsthand became one of the defining memories of the entire anniversary trip.

What’s happening at Tadman Financial?

We are Launching our Own Firm

Recently, we officially filed the registration paperwork to launch Tadman Financial as an independent Registered Investment Advisor (RIA).

This is an exciting next step for our business and allows us to continue improving the technology, planning resources, and overall experience we provide to clients.

For nearly 18 years, we have partnered with larger firms to provide the brokerage, advisory, compliance, and operational support behind our practice. That structure is common in our industry and has helped support our growth over the years.

As Tadman Financial has continued to grow, we have reached a point where we can now operate as our own independent advisory firm rather than under another firm’s advisory platform.

The primary difference is that Tadman Financial will now serve as the advisory firm directly. This gives us greater flexibility to enhance technology, reporting, planning tools, and the overall client experience while continuing to provide the personalized service our clients expect.

We are excited about this next chapter and look forward to continuing to serve you for many years to come.

Upcoming Event

Shakespeare Festival

We’re excited to invite our clients to our upcoming client appreciation evening at the Boise Shakespeare Festival on June 20th—a night that Marty and Nicky consider one of the best experiences Boise has to offer. We’ll begin the evening with a relaxed patio gathering featuring food, drinks, and dessert before enjoying a live performance in one of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the area. This is a client-only event (with the option of bringing guests), and whether you join us for the full evening or just part of it, we’d love to have you there for a memorable summer night together.

The 3 Types of Viking Cruise Ships

Viking is unusual among major cruise lines in that it operates both ocean ships and river ships. Despite this, it has one of the easiest-to-understand fleets. The bulk of Viking’s vessels fall into one of just three groups, with most of the ships in each group sporting very similar designs.

At first, that quiet can feel wonderful. After years of deadlines and responsibility, maybe even a relief. And then, somewhere in those first few months, another thought creeps in: Now what?
